What happens in the story

It is Christmas Eve. Bentley, a very big, very fluffy dog with one blue eye, one brown eye and a big curly tail, presses his nose to the window: something is coming. Then the snow falls. Bentley bounces, rolls, digs and chases snowflakes round the garden, pulls the sledge, and watches his family build the perfect snowman with a carrot nose. But the nose keeps disappearing, and there are little orange crumbs on Bentley’s whiskers. After a busy, happy day the whole pack snuggles up, and the story ends calmly, ready for sleep.

Why parents choose it

  • Made to read aloud: short, bouncy sentences, sound words (whoosh, flump, crunch, swish) and a join-in refrain: “And his big curly tail goes… wag, wag, wag!”
  • A bedtime-friendly ending: busy and giggly in the middle, calm and cosy at the end.
  • A gentle mystery to spot: children love working out who keeps eating the snowman’s nose.
  • A warm British family: Mummy, Daddy, big brother Austin (13), Piero (6) and Tails the cat, who prefers radiators to snow.
  • Easy to gift: fits a stocking or a Christmas Eve box; the Kindle edition can be read tonight.
  • Free extras: a colouring page and Snow Day Story-Time Pack to print at home.

Questions parents ask

What age is Bentley and the Big Snow Day for?

It is written for children aged 2 to 6: toddlers, preschoolers and children in Reception or Year 1. The text is short and bouncy, with a repeated line little ones can join in with.

What is Bentley and the Big Snow Day about?

When snow falls on Christmas Eve, Bentley the big fluffy family dog has the best day of his life. He bounces, sledges and plays with his family while they build the perfect snowman, but the snowman keeps losing his carrot nose, and Bentley has orange crumbs on his whiskers.

Is it a Christmas book?

Yes. The story takes place on Christmas Eve, so it suits Christmas Eve boxes, stockings and December bedtimes. Because it is mostly about snow, family and a happy dog, it also works as a winter bedtime story all season.

Is it a good bedtime story?

Yes. After a busy, giggly day in the snow, the story winds down to a calm, snuggly ending, so it settles children rather than winding them up.

How long is the book and how long does it take to read aloud?

It is a 32-page picture book with about 1,100 words. Most families read it aloud in roughly 8 to 10 minutes, including time to look at the pictures and join in.

Is it a good gift for a toddler or preschooler?

Yes. The paperback is a small, giftable picture book that fits a stocking or a Christmas Eve box, and the Kindle edition can be read the same night.

What kind of dog is Bentley?

Bentley is a very big, very fluffy Malamute cross Husky with one blue eye, one brown eye and a big curly tail. He loves carrots, which is a problem for the snowman.

Where can I buy Bentley and the Big Snow Day?

The Kindle edition (ASIN B0HQ5HPMJD) and the paperback (ISBN 9798166744678) are on Amazon UK and Amazon US. The ebook is also on Apple Books, Kobo and Tolino, and is distributed to libraries through services such as OverDrive (Libby) and BorrowBox.

Are there free activities to go with the book?

Yes. You can download a free Bentley colouring page and a Snow Day Story-Time Pack (talk-about questions, a make-your-own snowman and a colouring page) from this site, in A4 and US Letter. No sign-up is needed.

What books are similar to Bentley and the Big Snow Day?

Families who enjoy gentle, funny Christmas read-alouds such as Kipper's Christmas Eve by Mick Inkpen, Mog's Christmas by Judith Kerr or Bear Stays Up for Christmas by Karma Wilson often like Bentley too. It has the same warm family feel, with a big, lovable dog at the centre.

Is there a next book in the series?

Yes. Book 2, Bentley Loves His Pack, is a Valentine's story about Bentley giving away his very best things to show his family he loves them. It is coming on 20 December 2026.
